Hey there everyone...
I thought I would share my performance tip for running FSX and getting a solid 18-20 fps with most senery settings set on high:
GET A MAC!
Well, a MacPro really. Ain't that funny? I'm not kidding, I'm not trying to be cute or a Mr. Smartypants like that guy in the Mac commercials. This is a real tip. In addition to being a flight sim enthusiast, I am also a multimedia developer. As a part of my real life job, I got myself a MacPro about a month ago. For those of you in the dark about the MacPro, it's powered by a couple of Intel dual cores, and in my case they both clock in at 3 Ghrz. I have only a Gig of memory, but the MacPro also comes with a nVidia 7300GT video card which has 256 meg of ram onboard. Not bad.
Here's the key: Mac makes a little program called Boot Camp, which allows you to partition a drive and put a copy of XP on there. It then boots natively and uses the hardware directly (this is no VIRTUAL PC deal - this runs Windows directly on the Mac).
I am running most scenery on HIGH, with the exception of Autogen, which I set at MEDIUM HIGH. I have cars on the roads and all of that eye candy going on, albeit at a low setting. Still, everything looks and runs grea and I'm getting 20 fps! Smooth.
I don't know whether there is something to be said about losing BIOS and having the Mac deal with the hardware, or what. I've had a lot of PCs over the years, and this Mac running Boot Camp has given me the most stable Windows environment I've ever experienced.
I'm looking forward to hearing what the folks at Microsoft think of my little performance tip. Better yet, I wonder what Apple would say....
