I was wondering if anyone here at DVA can help me. I've just purchased an Nvidia 7600GS graphics card, runs FS2004 like a dream on a whole, however I am getting periodic frame rate drops. From a locked 20 it dips down to 8fps or so for about 30 seconds then returns to normal.
Anyone got any ideas?

The cause could be any one or a combination of a hundered things. I would start by looking at what else you have running. Any email programs, web site that do auto refreshes, anit virus programs, etc. Shut them down and try FS. If the issue is still there then it is some thing with the hardware or FS, If it's gone, the issue is with one of the programs you turned off. Start them one at a time to see what causes the problem. Hardware, I'll leave to others.

Just wondering if anyone technical-minded can answer this question about my new theory.
I wiped my computer and started again, installed the new graphics card and FS9 only. Still had the same issue.
Now, my 7600GS manual says a minimum power of 300W.
I went into a shop and asked for a 350W power supply. I got one which when investigated, says on the side that it has a PEAK power of 350W. The max rating for 12VDC continuous is 250W.
Is it possible that this is the cause of the slowdown, that the PSU can't supply the max power all the time, therefore everything is slowing down?
Desperate to get this sorted, even bought the LAGO mad-dog in anticipation of being able to run FS at the max!!

Intel D820
1Gig Ram
Nvidia 7600GS (GalaxyTech Version)
PSU is a 255W with a peak flow of 350W.
When I had no graphics card in the computer (relying purely on the on-board graphics) FS2004 ran on low settings, but consistantly. With the new graphics card it seems to dip.
The graphics card requirement is 300W as previously mentioned.

It might be your processor. I'll need to know the Ghz of the processor in order to determin if you might need a new one. for FS2004 needs atleast 2.0 Ghz. but youve probably already got that. as for the card needing 300W. thats a lot of power. also what brand of pc do you have?

2.8GHZ, pentium D820 as I mentioned. The card system requirements said 300w, not the card on it's own. It's a mesh computer. Surely if Itwas the processors fault I would haev had the same issue without the new graphics card?

I receive the same frame rate drops whenever I'm flying in anything but clear weather. I have the same video card as you do--I really think it's the graphics card, but maybe Ben has a different theory.

I've found in the bios that theres a function which reduces power to the CPU if it starts to over-heat. I haven't fully tested it but it seems to make a difference. it's just working out how to get my computer to cool down without spending anymore money (I have the case cover off at as it is!)

Running the computer with an open case is actually more harmful than good. Granted it allows a mass of warm air to escape, but the design of the case vectors the airflow (produced by the cooling fans) over the components and heatsinks to keep things cooler. If you remove the case, the cooling fans are unable to move air across the components properly.

What kind of temperature for a D820 is time to stop doing stuff that raises the heat?
With FS2004 running in a thunderstorm on everything ultra high its at 67C according to speedfan.

I am not an Intel engineer, but if you take a look at this thread, it may shed some light on your question
http://forums.techpowerup.com/archive/index.php/t-8984.html
One of the individuals quotes an Intel spec that states it should be good up too 80 c. On another note, I think I would install a power supply with at least a 450watt rating. Don't know if it would solve your issue, but 350w seems a bit light.

I've got a 500W in it now, thinking that it was the PSU that was the problem.
30FPS, everything maxed out. Only time I've seen slowdown is at KATL and KJFK.
