I'm one of the new pilots here and I'm finding out there are TONS of great utilities for 2004 (which I bought and never installed due to a heavy WoW addiction I just got over) and very few for FSX. Specifically FSPassengers and Squakbox and the Delta Fleets.
So I'm curious if anyone else has done it.
Also curious if I try to install 2004 on the same machine with FSX will it cause problems or is it even possible?
(I'm also considering this for frame rate issues.)

Compared to FS9(2004) FSX will probably have a lower frame rate unless you back off the GFX a bit. You can install and run both on one computer. The utilities and aircraft are starting to pop up on the major sim websites and it is possible to find everything needed to fly online. Most FS9 aircraft will be able to be used by FSX as well... there are a few migration tools available. The most common problem seems to be VC guages not showing up.
Personally, I have just bought a new Laptop with a T7600 Core2Duo, 2 Mb RAM and a 512MB 7950 GTX video card. I am able to get 28 to 34 FPS with only backing off the light bloom and Auto Gen Scenery to Normal. I do turn the AI aircraft off when online. If you have a Dual Core processor you may want to wait until the FSX SP1 comes out (April) as the developers are promising (not a guarentee, of course) a 20% increase in performance (Frame Rate) with Multi Core Owners

I had spent a good deal of money building my own computer about a year ago. AMD X2 4200, 3 GB RAM, 7900 GT (256 MB) video card. I was so disappoined with FSX that I went back to FS2004. Also, I'm finding a lot of the aircraft I use won't run on FSX.
In my opinion, FSX added a good deal of eye candy to the program, but little in the way of the actual flight model. If you prefer looking out the window, you would do good with FSX, if your preference is flying the plane, and/or you want a decent framerate, stick with FS2004.
I have them both installed, and am able to run either one, without any known conflicts.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll install FS2004 so I can fly Delta planes in my rating class as well. Its nice viewing the cities as I fly by (LOVE Lincoln Financial Field flying into Philly) but otherwise I'd like to run some other features. Especially FSPassenger

With all the paywware I have purchased and will continue to purchase (Mad Dog tomorrow) for FS9 (2004), I will stick with it till FSX can start to handle the add ons that make it more realistic and enjoyable. I would give it atleast another year before I even consider switching, plus till then , the price of FSX will continue to drop. Plus, the bugs and tweeks will be figured out by then.

Every time MS comes out with a new FS there are threads just like this. And eventually, typically within a year or so most people have converted to the latest version. Same threads appeared between FS98-FS2000, FS2000-FS2002, FS2002-FS2004, FS2004-FSX......in 2-3 years time when FSXI comes out there will be more threads saying how "I am sticking with FSX.....FSXI frames rates are....."
And so the story goes....

i started with FSX and then bought FS2004, which i think needs alot fo work, guess thats why there is so much payware and freeware out there for it. i only got fs2004 for the pilot training program after that im done with it..every game is like this though, nobody wants to change, then everybody does, and then the next in the serries comes out and it all starts again..im waiting for the next FS to come out, cant wait to see what they make better next..
