It is a nice plane to fly on as a passenger, especially the new international config. Delta have with touch screen IFE. Was it a faliure? Depends really because that can be subjective. Some people might say yes because it only sold about ~40 frames. On the other hand, Boeing did make some modifications to suit Delta because the extension of the 767, while a replacement for ageing tri-jets, was really a specific project to please Delta. From what I've heard, it would have been more successful if it had a longer range, but the -400ER's range is about 1000nm less than the 300ER. But seeing as they already had the 200 and 300, development costs for a stretch would have been fairly minimal and probably made a profit for Boeing. So if you measure it from the profit point of view it possibly made money and was a success. For Delta and Continental it was a success. Compared with the 300ER, it was probably a faliure because of the smaller number of frames it sold.
I'm not sure though, I like the plane, so for me as a passenger it's a success
