hi guys, at the mo iam still running FS9 on my computer but with this new update which seems to have sorted some issues out and with the announcement from PMDG about products on the way iam now thinking of upgrading for it, my current specs are - P4 2.9GHZ, 1.5 GGS OF RAM, 512MB graphics card, 180GIG hard drive and WINDOWS XP which runs FS9 great even when online, yeah you get some drops in FPS when online but that is normal
what should i upgrade to for FSX, maybe some more memory, duo core, windows vista?? what do you clever computer guys think?? ive heard that with duo core it works really well?
sorry for teh long thread, just wanna get it right when i do upgrade later in the year.
thanks

later in the year? wait for opinions until then if that is your plan.
My general rule of thumb is get an idea of how much you want to spend and when you want to spend it - and then go from there. Continue with research up until a month before purchase and start really planning it out.

What's recommended now could very well change 6 months from now. The one rule you can guarantee about computer hardware is that it is obsolete the moment it leaves the factory, since the replacement is already being created. Just remember, whatever you budget for the upgrade - double it!

But what I think can be said now is that to play FSX, you will need a complete rebuild to at least a C2D, if not a quad (which drop to $266 July 22nd) or one of the new AMD chips (coming out in June). Overall though, I think Daniel had some sound advice about research until a month before and then start considering specific options and watching prices closely.
Cheers,

Personally I am not building a new rig till Jan 2008, hopefully by then PC power and costs will be at a reasonable level to run FSX with the amount of detail I currently enjoy with FS9. (Sounds like forever but its only like 7 mos. from now)
As far as the accolades over the FSX SP1 I just do not get it, I picked up about 2 fps but it still looks like a cartoon on my system. I'm sure better PC's out there than mine can take better advantage of the SP than I was able to.

I also agree with Chuck here. If you have, say 1500 to spend, just wait a bit until prices drop. you could buy a nice core2 rig for about 1500 and play fsx @ about 30 fps with sp1 right now. You could buy the same components in a couple of monthes for probably right around 1000. because FS hangs around for so long and it is expected that fsx will be around for ~2+ years, it will be worth it to hold off.
I was at the point when I had the cash and wanted to upgrade for other reasons, besides FS. i kinda regret it now as I did not research enough about quad cores and their upcoming (so soon) release.
Again, my opinion is to hold off some. Set aside about 1500 (if you have a monitor) and build yourself a nice quad core when prices are appropriate. If prices are to drop as Geoffrey has suggested ($266 by july) that should get you a quad core, nice motherboard, HDDs, dx10 video card, case and all accessories.
