I recently installed a new graphics card and power supply in my FS computer. I noticed that when the power supply's fan kicks in to high gear, I hear a quick squeak followed by a quick crackle similar to static. It also happens slightly when the fan slows back down. Any ideas what could be causing this and how I can fix it?

Hey man!I think you shoult check the connection of your fan make sure the wires are in place and make sure your fan has no dust in it but I reccomend changing your fan If everything seems to be in place and you still hear the crackle/static.

I know the power supply fan is clean because it's brand new. I'll have to open the machine up and check all of the connections. Thanks.

Check to make sure that wires are clear of the Graphics Card fan. Also, the power supply might be new but there could be a piece of debris from the manufacturing process that shifted into the fan's path during shipment.

I think the mystery may be solved. It looks like it's the processor fan that is causing this sound out of the speakers. Whenever this fan kicks on, I get the squeak and static sound out of the speakers. Not sure what the deal is.

Happy flying and hope you get it worked out Larry! J.T.

Here's something interesting (and dumb on my part). I left the case open during my flight yesterday to keep an eye on things. As soon as I got the squeak/crackle deal, I began the investigation. All of the fans seemed to be running with no problems. I couldn't feel the power supply fan blowing air out the back so I decided to put my hand underneath and see if there was any air flow from the fan. In a moment of brilliance, I reached in to far and hit the processor fan stopping it in its tracks and taking a big chunk of skin off my finger. Upon closer inspection, I noticed I knocked out two of the "high quality" plastic blades. No crackle for the remainder of the flight. Of course now I don't know if the fan is simply messed up or if it was off balance and my genius move fixed it. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try it out again tonight and see what happens. I'll probably need to spend some more cash and pick up a new fan for the processor. Even with an open case, I had my own little bit of Arizona in there (it's a dry heat though). The saga continues...

Larry, from the sound of things the fan is starting to wear out. That squeal you hear is it wobbling in the bearing (or more likely bushing) points. It isn't worn enough for it to become constant yet, but it will - especially if the blades are damaged.
My recommendation would be to invest in a good ball-bearing CPU cooler fan. Fortunately the fans themselves are pretty inexpensive, although there is a point where "inexpensive" becomes "cheap" with a concurrent drop in quality. I'd advise getting a better quality fan, since heat buildup on the CPU rapidly becomes lethal. Get the same size fan (in millimeters) as the one you have so replacement will be a simple unscrew the old/screw on the new affair.

I'm planning on stopping by a somewhat local computer store after the long weekend and grabbing a replacement. Although I don't think the squeal is from the fan itself. That and the crackle sound comes from the speakers. Thanks for the tip on the fan size. I was under the assumption they'd all be the same general size.
