Matt,
The smaller laptops usually are more pricey than the larger ones. They also have smaller screens and keyboards which can take a bit getting use too, especially if you are a touch typist. If you are going to purchase MS Office with it, that could also increase the cost by several hundred dollars depending on which version you get. I have dealt with DELL on a professional level for several years now, and find their laptops to be adequate. When ordering from their web site, you can pick and choose the options you want and they will build it to your specifications. Although a bit more money, I would also consider getting the "total replacement" warrenty that they have available. College life can be detremental to the lifespan of a laptop and they will replace it fre of charge no matter what caused the failure. (ie....dropped...stepped on.....doused) All that being said, HP/Compaq, ACER and Toshiba all make a good product as well. You might want to try CNET.COM or Consumer Reports for reviews as well.
