I second that. I tried it earlier today and really enjoyed being able to speak to fellow pilots instead of
just typings in ACARS.
One issue though:
When I was at another VA a few years back, they too set up a TS server.
Problem was that it went offline all the time cause it was hosted by one of the members
and he had a slow connection.
May want to have dedicated servers for this if it's gonna be used by all active pilots.

I expect Terry may chime in at some point with some additional information, but let me add my own two cents' worth.
Delta Virtual currently has its own TeamSpeak server, which we use with the Flight Academy. This server is fully integrated into the web application, so your existing web site and ACARS credentials can be used to log in, but its use is limited to students enrolled within the Flight Academy. Instructors can administer channels, etc. etc. That is as it should be - any technical infrastructure that we attach the Delta Virtual Airlines name to must be controlled by us, and integrate seamlessly into our security architecture. From a convenience standpoint, it makes perfect sense to use the same user ID and password, and also from the standpoint of restricting and controlling access.
In short, there are no technical impediments right now to us hosting our own TeamSpeak server. Please understand that we always appreciate offers of assistance, and all of us were grateful that you felt strongly enough about our community to make your offer.
The problems we run into are in the areas of management and policy, and I fear they will affect any sort of voice communication. Anything that bears our name needs to provide the same responsible atmosphere as everything else we provide. The Water Cooler and ACARS are permanently logged and indexed, and even if we cannot be here 365/24/7 we do have the ability to detect inappropriate or unlawful behavior and deal with it. We do not have that ability with voice, and that is a serious hurdle that somehow needs to be overcome.
I apologize if I sound overly fearful or paranoid, but my own observations here and elsewhere bear that out. I've seen situations where other virtual airlines have created a "virtual radio station" under their banner, only to receive numerous complaints from their pilots about sexist, misogynistic or otherwise inappropriate lyrics. We've had numerous instances here at DVA where people have used ACARS to discuss software piracy and other illegal acts. The reason that doesn't happen anymore is that we have a record of everything, and people know that if it happens individuals involved no longer are our guests. I don't want or intend to run a police state. David and Chris hate being enforcers. The problem is that 99.9% of this airline are passionate, responsible individuals - who can get screwed by the other 0.1% who aren't.
We continue to exist and grow because we work hard on creating a reputation where pilots of all ages are welcome. Our "younger" members have an environment that their parents would feel comfortable with, and there are a significant number of folks here who are real-world pilots or Delta employees who give very generously of their time and talents because of what we provide. Just like a real-world airline, we're very cautious with our brand.
Personally, I think Terry and all of management would be responsive to a solution for our concerns. Voice is technically possible, if we can find some way of ensuring that we could monitor and control what went on in the Channel.
Cheers!

If I could make a suggestion in a previous Military VA they had a schedule of server admins that would record everything. Then at the end of there shift e-mail it to the President and Vice President Etc.... So I would be willing to be one of the "Voice Guards" in the DVA section of TS. I don't want to start anything bad so that was just my 2 cents.

Anthony, it is obvious that you can ran the TS server and I don't think that is the question here. Though I am not staff, I do have to agree with Luke's concerns regarding security - not necessarily with keeping non DVA out, but to monitor the voice channel adequately to ensure standards are met.

Let me emphasize what Daniel said. I cannot and will not ask you to shut down what you have. The only thing you cannot do is claim that it's a DVA server or in any way connected with us. If you and several friends want to connect and chat on your flights, go ahead and enjoy yourselves.
Cheers!

Okay it is time for Terry to chime in. I've been having an email dialog with Anthony explaining management's reasoning for not turning on our TS2 server 24/7 for free use of our pilots. Meantime I see that there is a parallel conversation in the Cooler. I will not restate the points Luke makes since we are aligned in our position.
Anthony is generous in his offer of TS2 server dedicated to DVA. We are grateful for his offer and interest in providing a service to DVA. I've informed him that we will unfortunately be unable to accept his offer since it is a service provided outside our system, which is an operating policy that we set with DVA2006 to assure control, content and sustainability going forward. (Our industrial strength server has run continuously for 615 days.) Our ability to monitor and manage content on our own voice server is a significant blocking point and primary reason that it isn't turned on 24/7. A third party service creates an added layer that distances management from content control even if we were prepared to offer the service.
As Anthony enabled a Server and channel at his will to our pilots, he of course is free to proceed as he wishes. We ask only that DVA's name, graphics or links to our site not be a part of the service.
We do use the TS2 server for Flight Academy instruction and Staff Conferences. It is a valuable tool that when properly managed is invaluable.
Our business is to enhance virtual aviation enjoyment through experience and knowledge. Providing free voice communications is not a core element of our business plan. We have multiple medium available to communicate with one another including under closely monitored situations voice.
