The other day my computer was literary Attacked in front of my eyes !!! Just researching
stuff, then the screen flickered a couple times then froze, then all these Adware sites
kept poping up telling me to buy all there products and Ctrl Alt Delete didn't do anything,
couldnt turn it off, it was just frozen, and popups came by the hundreds, I pulled to power
cord and turned the computer back on and it was just a black screen. So I turned it off for a day,
And then I went to Best Buy and bought Norton Anti virus, I ran the scanner and it found
423 viruses, It deleted all of those and I restarted my computer and It worked again !!! But
I cant open any programs without it taking forever and my FS FPS on KATL Ground
has dropped to under 10 from near 25, Ive tested It at other airports with same result, it
even takes a internet pages near a minute to load, Ive ran the scan a couple times
Im pretty sure every virus is gone and all my popup and adware problems are gone according
to Norton, But my computer runs slower then angry tortoises marching through peanut butter,
what can I do to restore my computers performance ?
Thanks in advance

Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore. If that fails, you may have to put in your Windows disc and start fresh by reloading everything. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I truely do not understand people who have nothing better to do than destroy other peoples computers by writing virus programs.

Believe it or not the slowdown may be...Norton Antivirus. With all its bells and whistles turned on it can really slow your computer down. You also want to download and run Spybot Search and Destroy and Lavasoft AdAware to get rid of the things NAV left behind. You might also check into AVG (Anti-Virus Guard), since it tends to catch thing Norton doesn't.
NAV used to be the best going, but that was while Peter Norton was still in charge. Symantec just doesn't have the magic touch any more.

best move - back up your files to a USB external drive and reformat the hard drive and start over - quicker that way

Trevir,
Sorry to hear about the problems. It is extremely frustrating when things like that happen. I used Norton at one time but as Barry commented it can bring a decent computer to its knees. I use AVG and it has been great for my surrounding family. For some reason my Mom gets attacked all the time (must be all the junk email)and it has caught all except one. The one it missed came in an email from someone she did not know. She new better than to click on the link but she did anyway and the rest is history.
Might want to look into a "Ghost" program which copies one hard drive to another so if something goes wrong I just switch the hard drives and keep on going. I do not "back it up" all the time but basically once a month or when I make a big change I want to keep.
Good Luck
Robert

Thanks for all your help I was thinking Norton contributes to some of the slowness but I cant
find a way to turn it off or disable it when I want to run FS, I downloaded Ad-aware and some more
adware was detected and I deleted it, I'll have to try the system restore thing suggested by Steven
But if that doesnt seem to work I'll have to try the Reformat, but the thing is I dont have a USB
external drive so I'd like to try whats free first. And yess It is a shame why anyone would want
to mess up peoples stuff like that And hopefully I get this figured out so I can log some more hours
Thanks everyone

I recently installed Norton Internet Protection or whatever it's called, in my Mom's laptop (she's a teacher, she has to handle tons of files from her students). The laptop was running more or less fast considering its specs, but after I installed Norton for her, she comes back that day saying "Hey I think Norton slows down the lappy even more than those viruses, get rid of it please!"
Norton is well-known for being a system-resources hog. Next time you get spyware or malware in your computer, visit this site, they'll help you out:

You can turn off the autoprotect feature of NAV by right clicking on the system tray icon and then its self explanatory. This might save you some resources... I run a dual core and see no change with it on or off.

Yes, you can back up your pictures and other files to cd if you want. I wouldn't worry too much about someone trying to hack into your system. The bigger hackers are targetting large corporations and military sites. Just do make sure that you do not keep personally identifyable information on your computer such as a file with your social security number, various account numbers, passwords, etc...in an unencrypted file. I set my browser history to 0 days, regulary empty my cache, regularly clear out cookies, and never, ever allow IE to remember passwords.
After doing all of this, I still run Adaware, a-squared free, and CC cleaner frequently to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, these are things that one must do to practice safe surfing these days.

Trevir,
What you should probably do is have an external USB drive or something that you can periodically copy your files to. Leave this disconnected from your computer when not in use so that if you PC becomes infected, these files are "clean".
The only real thing to stop this IMHO is to whack the PC's hard drive with a COLD BOOT to the Windows XP or Vista CD and delete the partition and start over.
If you have super important things, you can try copying to a USB drive as I mentioned. Some files such as flight1.com downloads, etc., can be downloaded again, but you may need your username/password and/or email with the serial number, etc. Everything I buy from simmarket.com, for example, is easily accessible when I log into the site - I can download files, get my serial numbers, etc.
Last, don't click on things you know nothing about - this means e-mails from people you don't know, web sites you have no business going to, chat/messenging programs, etc. This should keep you out of trouble. Virus checkers are worthless sometimes - you have to learn how to avoid the stuff in the first place.

What George said. The other advantage to reloading the OS (and the programs that you use) is that you will find that after the reload, your computer will most likely run a bit better than it has in the past. Having a nice clean registry does wonders.

well, that depends what type of partitions do you have, an how many of them, if you have just one, uf you may try to atche another hard drive and transfer the important information to the new one, if you have 2 partitions, format just (C - where i`ts the Os - operating system), just one where i`ts os and install again OS, and SOMEBODY ATACK YOU, you have NASA computer..., or maybe i`ts true, somebody atack you, my opinion i`ts you have some spyware, you don`t need to change your IP (i`ts DHCP?) just install a good firewall like zone alarm or sygate and see what programm try to exit, and install an antivirus like nod32 (some antivirus occupy to mutch RAM and you do not want to work with the computer with 40% of resource)
(just my opinion, Soory for my english THANKS. )

Norton has given me bad experiences. Did you know norton misses 80% of viruses on your PC and that it can kill FPS by 40%. I use zonealarm which is VERY good and finds a ton more viruses and has a great firewall all without loseing FPS. Run chkdsk to search out errors and/ or reformat.

I'd like to see that too. I am not a fan of the newer Norton (Symantec) Products, as they are CPU intensive, but I think their kill rate is much better than 20%.

Ryan, what that said is that with Norton he was getting a 40% reduction in FPS, nothing about an 80% missing Viruses. In fact Norton 2007 is probably one of the best Security suites out there, with top Awards from PC magazine and Computer Shopper. Now if you have anything before Nortan 2007 I would have to agree that it is a Frame rate Killer. Once I installed Nortan Security suite 2007 (or for those that want a simpler interface - Norton 360) I saw no Frame rate differance in FSX. I do however turn off the automatic file scanning as this will scan the .bgl, .cfg and any other files as FS opens them up. Also you may want to use FSautostart to start up your FS9 and FSX as this will allow you to control what is started up for your game. Now I know there are a lot of Anti Norton guys out there, so feel free to put your personal experiances out there. As for me I'll stick with the best.

No Ryan, this statement "norton misses 80% of viruses on your PC"
Norton uses 0-1% CPU on my computer, therefore, no frame rate reduction.

well i`ts not true what i read in `http://ops.precisionmanuals.com/wiki/PMDG_Products_Frame_Rates_FAQ` about to fiind viruses the karspersky, bitdefender, norton i`ts the best for virus finding not spyware, just if you install some of this products you will work with about 40-45% of the computer performance (and the performance i don`t talk about the CPU, i mean the CPU and ammount of RAM)

I apologize Lucas, but I don't understand what you said last. I agree that Norton is not the best spyware remover out there. I recommend to all my users, that they install at least two Spyware/Adware removers in addition to a Security suiteon thier personal computers. I leave it up to them most of the time because I found the best software is the one that get used. My personal favorites are AdAware - Free, Spybot Search and Destroy - Free, and Norton Security 2007 with all the bells and whistles 70.00 - 40 dollar rebate if I buy some cheap IRS software and - 20 upgrade from the previous year, so it ended up only costing me $30 ($20 for the Tax Cut).
Another Plug for Symantec, is that most of the US military uses Syamantec Corporate edition for its A/V and F/W. And again I will repeat the 2007 Norton has a much smaller CPU footprint and the Norton 360 that is based off 2007 is one of the easiest to use.

Getting Back to helping out intrepid aviator at the top of the thread. If you had that many Viruses there is a good chance that you may need to Run the AV and Spyware programs in Safe Mode. This will allow some more of the Viruses, particularly Trojan's to be properly removed. Run the Spyware and Adware Remover and check your internet again. If you are still getting pop ups record their addresses or at least the names of them and do a search on them. Ensure that in your Internet Explorer you have not installed any toolbars such as CoolWebSearch or and XXX search bars. These are nothing more then tracking and ad placement programs that look at what you are searching for.
If all else fails look for and download a copy of HiJackThis at http://www.tomcoyote.org/hijackthis and post your results in the Hijackthis logs forums link located on the same page. You will have to register to post in the forums, but there are a lot of experienced people that can and do help you out. HijackThis is a program that outputs a simple text file that will allow others to see exactly what is being loaded by your computer. I have done a few of the courses but I am nowhere near as proficient as some of Tom Coyote's tech guru's

I have avg, but I don't think it can remove viruses. All it do is put the virus in the virus vault so it doesn't mess with your pc so it isn't active. Yes, Norton does slow you system down. 1gb of ram Norton uses 412mb you might as well just run vista. I heard http://www.kaspersky.com/ is the king of virus protection. If you running on a network, wireless connection your router might already have a firewall like Linksys, if not firewall could be a could think if you worry by hackers.

Told you so...
Most antispyware programs don't work once you are infected, and those guys at Spywareinfo are just too good. Glad to hear you're safe now.

if it happens again you could just do what my dad and i do, send an email to the company telling them that unless the send you something or tell you how to get it off you will contact the appropriate authorities as you have done in the past. it ALWAYS works
