If you're attempting to connect to VATSIM, you can type to controllers.
However, a cheap USB headset (which only costs a couple bucks) is definitely worth the investment. It'll allow you to route all the ATC comms to the headset, and leave your computer speakers for engine/cockpit noises. In addition, being able to "talk" to ATC, especially when in busy areas such as LAX/BOS/JFK/ATL, adds an entirely new level of immersion to the sim.

Does anyone remember the "ancient" way to connect? Way back in the FS2000 days? The term Roger Wilco should ring a bell! Its a lot easier these days to connect, which is a good thing!
