I'm looking to purchase my new desktop within 7days. I'm comparing the HP 8120 vs the Gateway 5478 system. Any recommendations. I'll also be running my home business on this computer which is the main reason for the purchase. $5000.00 budgeted for the new system plus inket and other supplies once i get a new system.

$5k will buy you an OK rig from a commercial builder. That same $5k will buy you an outstanding system IF you buy the parts and put them together yourself. You will be able to pick and choose exactly which parts you want, base on how you want the computer to perform. Very few commercial builders (which does NOT include Compaq, HP, DELL - those are what I call "crap builders") will give you the total freedom to dictate each and every component in a build. If you aren't comfortable choosing your own, there are several people right here on this forum who can give you invaluable advice on what parts to purchase and how to put them together.
Best thing of all about a custom build? That $5k will buy everything you need, and leave you the majority of it to use on something else.

Barry has certainly given the best advice. If you are capable of building your own, then go for it. You'll save at minimum, 50% of your budget.

Even if you don't have the time or patience to do it yourself - it would be financially smarter to buy all the parts from say newegg.com and take them to a local privately owned computer store for assembly. By doing this you will get waaaaaayyy more bang for your buck. Something to think about at least.

Have a look at Luke's thread:
http://www.deltava.org/thread.do?id=0xdac0
Looks like 1000 bucks can be more than enough to run FSX smoothly! And yes, building the computer yourself can save you thousands, literarilly!

There are many sites which will guide you through assembly of a new PC. Everyone here can suggest components for the system. or build you a list at newegg.com. they are one of the best component suppliers i know of. Also, ask around with your friends they might know how to assemble a PC. Ask a co worker they might be a college intern, like i was and repaired computer problems for a home cooked meal and a little beer $$, or they may know someone at work that is good with PCs.
Check out
Toms Hardware Guide --- www.tomshardware.com
there is a step through build on their site.
Don't be affraid they are not that hard to assemble. i can have one together in under an hour. just remember time and patience.

Good information. Thanks. I'm not sure if I'll have the time but it might be worth the patience to build my own system. More than likely I'll end purchasing but for now I'll visit the recommended websites in this thread.

Indeed he can. But He wants to spend on a killer gaming system. So yeah, I would say build it
yourself and you'll have alot leftover, and mabey enough to take some PPL lessons

Build time from boxes is about 1-2 hours generally. My current system took me maybe 1.5 hours to assemble, taking photos of every stage. Installing Windows is the longest part of the build, taking about 2 hours with all the claptrap they have you do. Once installed you also have to let it download and install the innumerable critical updates that it will otherwise annoy you about every 10 minutes until you either break down and allow it do install them or commit computercide.
From parts to a fully working, gaming ready rig will take 3-4 evenings work, true. The savings in money and frustration because your store bought box has 4,000 junk programs installed that you need to uninstall is totally worth it.
