I'm using McAfee VirusScan ver 8.0i and I have the latest updates installed. I'm also using Spybot-search and destroy for spyware. Can you tell me of better programs that are available. I have been using them both for a while but I still have very slow pc performance compared to last year so I think something is up. Any suggestions?

Slow PCs are not only caused by viruses and spyware/adware. Sometimes you need to do a little maintenance on your hard drives and memory as well. I use Diskkeeper to keep the Hard drives defragged and System Mechanic to get rid of unwanted duplicate files/ temp files/ and to defrag the RAM. Just by having a lot of files your computer will run slower as it tries to find the files.
As was stated in another thread, I highly recommend that everyone has at a minimum three pieces of Security Software. First you should have a Firewall Software, Second, an anti-virus, and third a spyware detection and removal. For the lastone, I have not found any one program that finds all types of Spyware, Adware, and Malware. I use Spybot S&D and AdawareSE (both free)
In addition to those programs that are used for detecting and stopping or removing malicious code, I also use a program called Hijackthis.exe. This program allows you to dump your startup and registry entries to a text file that can be analyzed by those more knowledgeable than myself. I would caution anyone that does use this to check with a reputable site such as Tom Coyote's website before making any changes.

If still in doubt, go here bro:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?act=idx
As Ronald said, these guys can help you out by analyzing the report created by Hijackthis and get rid of any possible Spyware.
Also, I use Paretologic Antispyware, it's pretty good, I think it's the upgraded version from XoftSpy.

if you want to spend you can get a Yoggie Pico Personal. it looks like a USB thumb drive, but it is a fully functioning Linux base computer running security software. Yoggie runs a total of 13 security applications and it screens everything going into your pc without you having to put the software on the computer itself, and having that software slow down you PC. the Yoggie Pico Personal is $180 for the unit then $30 per year, and u get the first year free. i'm saving up to get one. the website is www.yoggie.com

Ronald,
How do you like Sytem Mechanic? Have you had any issues or problems with it? I read about it and like what I see so far as it would help improve performance. I use Ultimate Defrag and have been pleased so far. It lets me degrag for performance - placing the programs I want on the hard drive in a position that allows for faster access - outer edge of the HD. But System Mechanic looks like it will do even more. Let me know your thoughts - thanks.

I like System Mechanic so far for its Utilities, kind of reminds my of the old Norton Utility software before it became Symantec. A lot of features and pretty good reviews from CNET and PC mag. I don't use any of the automated features, because I like to keep as much resources free as possible, but it works great to defrag memory, erase tracks (internet, last opened files, documents etc), I also use the Duplicate File removal feature (carefully of course) and the temp file removal.
The features are nice, and the User interface is quick and easy to learn. No issues or problems, but like I said I don't let anything run in the background save for my A/V and Firewall and a couple of M'soft system processes
