Icing is serious business with respect to flying. I have always thought that it is crazy to certify GA aircraft for flying into icing conditions even if they have boots. This incident simply underscores how important preflight planning is. All pilots should get the latest weather (Departure, enroute, arrival, alternate, etc.) as close to their planned T/O time as practical. After that pilots need to have a plan B & C if they get caught up in deteriorating conditions.
IMO, even if your an experienced commercial pilot with IFR endorsement always plan on steering clear of weather. If that means going over it, under it, or flying around it. I'd rather pay more $$$, take on more fuel and fly around a weather system than take a chance going through it only to save a little bit of time.
When in doubt, don't take-off.

Why in the world would she want to continue flying for 2 more hours after subjecting her airplane to severe maneuvers and icing... why not land and check out the plane, wait for weather to improve??? She really took unnecessary risks at that point. Stupid.

Actually that was was one of the things that crossed my mind , she seemed to be really rattled after that near death experience she should not have been continuing to fly for 2 hours. I doubt if she flew alot after that, not in icing conditions anyway

I think the ground controller is the one who's confused. It sounds like the pilots knew exactly where they were. It was good for a laugh though.

I think I had this same ground controller (and some of his family and friends) try and make reservations with me when I worked for Delta rez. a few years back. It was a three ring circus just trying to find a flight. Apparently not much has changed!
