I had to buy a new computer which was loaded with Vista Home Premium. To say that there have been some interesting results with FS9 is an understatement. Here are some of my observations and thoughts:
1. I have set up most, if not all, FS9 and related executables as running under administrator and compatible with XP Service Pack 2. Seems to be happy with that for the most part.
2. Occasionally a flight seems to hang or be non-responsive. If I minimize (put in the task tray) and then bring it back up FS responds again. Go figure...
3. Like many people who fly the FeelThere 73X series I can't start the flight using the FeelThere aircraft because FS crashes. I did read this morning in their forum that a possible work around is to start the flight with the default Cessna then change to the desired FeelThere aircraft. I haven't had the chance to try this one yet. I will when I get home and let you know if that works.
4. I am having problems with SquawkBox voice. It's possible, but unlikely, that my Plantronics headset mic stopped working when I moved to the new machine. I can hear just fine, but not talk. When I go the SB Options page and select the voice tab, I can't get anything to change in the push to talk key assignments. It also records nothing when I do the the mic calibration. I just get a very short buzzing sound during the playback of the voice test. And, yes, I ensured that the correct equipment was selected in the audio and voice equipment sections. Anyone else having problems there?
5. My sceneries load faster, especially the Cloud9 LAX and AMS. On my old machine it was not unusual to wait 10-15 mins at start up with LAX as my departure airport. This long load time was exacerbated when I used one of the more complex payware aircraft (e.g., the PMDG 744). In Vista it takes just a few seconds to load. I also have 2 GB RAM, whereas my old machine had 512 MB RAM.
6. I have used the PMDG 738 with no problems. The PSS 752 worked just fine, too. I haven't tried the 744, PSS 777, nor the LDS 763 yet. I still need to load the ERJ-145 and the ATR-72. I'll do those when I get some of these other kinks worked out.
7. I don't have the specs off the top of my head for the video card in it. I have an nVidia 6600 256 MB from my old machine on hand.
8. If I have to manually edit an aircraft CFG file I can't do it within the aircraft folder because when I try to save it I get a file save error. I have to drag the CFG file out to desktop, edit it there, save it, then drop it back in the appropriate aircraft folder.
10. You will have to set up your load edit programs for the payware aircraft to run under administrator and XP compatible. Otherwise you get error messages.
When I see other things, or remember more, I'll post them...
