When flying online, you can't use progressive taxi. You have to use an Airport Diagram available through ACARS Charts to guide yourself.
Or, you can ask GND for directions.

And the reason you can't use it is because you are using vatsim and have not queued the FS ATC in the program. I kinda missed progressive taxi assistance at first but then decided to add another level of realism and just try to make my way using the airport diagrams. It also helps to use the lookdown view and get an idea of where you are at the start of your taxi.
You'll have to forgive me if I have any spelling errors in this posting. I'm posting via BlackBerry and may have fat thumbs. You know you are addicted when you just gotta get Deltava even when traveling without a laptop.

Here's a hint for you. Ask FSground for clearance. If they give the same runway as the VATSIM ground is using, you can then use progressive taxi (normally they do). However, you will have to use the charts if they don't.

I have heard when the atc tower is not so busy them give a sort of verbal progressive scan, I think the pilot asked if twr or whoever was running departures could provide them, and they would tell them a few intructions and then tell them to call back, and then gave them a few more, only did the one flight online yesturday but sat at ATL for a little while the guy runing it for a little while was great helped alot and seemed to do very well with the other pilots, also heard some guy name ghostrider lose both engines and sounds like he didnt make it back was a lot of fun, and I found they are some really nice guys/girls that run the atc...

<quote>...verbal progressive scan. </quote>
I think I have that on my flat-panel TV!?
When I'm working ATC online, I usually don't mind helping a pilot out with a progressive taxi (another benefit of flying online). But, it certainly *does* help if you can get an airport diagram. They're free for the US at www.myairplane.com so it's pretty easy to prepare yourself before/during/after your flight. Just be sure that you're asking tower or ground. Approach and center will usually have their tag display settings turned to not display aircraft squawking standby.

Well I know in real life a little pink line won't just show up! To me realism is everything in a simulator.
Anyway, airport diagrams are available in the approach charts section of the pilot center. You get your airport and get a facility diagram. Clicking CTRL+S will give you a great spot down view of the airport to get you a sense of the diagram and direction. Pressing the + and - key will zoom in and out for you.

I have found the best help is the airport diagrams found in the diagrams part of this website, and situational awareness, know what gate your loading up fs at and that helps or sometimes if I forget I will do a topdown view until I figure how the airport is layed out at the direction I am sitting at...

The best is when the controller on VATSIM gives you very explicit taxi instructions i.e.
"DAL2086 taxi RWY 22L via Mike, Sierra, Sierra 4, Charlie 5, Bravo"
You can always ask for progressive taxi even on VATSIM.
