I am running FS9 with Windows XP on a basic Dell 4600 and I upgraded this to 3 gigs of RAM, I set this up with two 1 gig strips and two 512 mg strips. I read that this might not be the best set-up so I pulled all the strips and then re-inserted just two 1 gig strips. It runs like a tiger with 2 of the 4 slots occupied with 1 gig each strips. Even better than with all 4 slots filled with 2 512s and two 1 gigs. Why is this? Thanks

If those 1 gig sticks are the same, the ram is probably running in dual channel mode. Thats why it is better. Can be explained in great detail here at this address.

We would need more information/specs on all memory used. It is possible the 512 sticks are clocked for a slower speed and thus drop all system memory to the lowest common denominator. What speed are the the 512 MB sticks and the 1 GB sticks?

It's also possible that the motherboard cannot drive all four slots at DDR400 speeds, and drops to DDR333 when all are filled.
Cheers!

So what you guys are saying is in my case I get only 1 GIG chips. Right now I have 1 GIG and 2 256MB. I had another 1 GIG but I gave it to my sister. I have a AMD64 HP Pavillion and it's max is 4 GIGS, should I just get only 1GIG cards rather than 512 or 256. I don't want to re-ask the same question so my question is does it matter what pc you have?

first see what motherboard model you have. it should be on the motherboard itself. put the model you find into a search engine like google. find your memory specs. then use those specs to get your memory. when you use memory modules with different speeds, the system will set all of them to the lowest speed as someone mentioned. if your motheboard is DDR2 compatible, thats even better because the memory will run twice as fast as normal RAM. even if the memory size is different between modules it should be ok as long as the frequency and timings are the same. for example i have 3GB of pc5400 @ 5-5-5-20.

and make note of this if u have rams of 2 gig in dual channel running at 800mhz or 1066mhz , that is faster then a 4 gig of 533mhz ram.
and buy some good rams like which have less timing the lower at higher mhz is better but will be cost u more also. fine some rams of 800mhz 4-4-4-12, that will be enough for rendering.

if anyones having trouble with knowing the ram speeds or what ram upgrades they should
get should try Crucial memory's online scanner. Really helped me when it came time to upgrade.
