I ordered a nearly bare-bones Acer business computer from NewEgg this morning.
This will be quite an improvement over the current 1.3Ghz Athlon Thunderbird based system I'm currently using. Even though this will be a dedicated FS9 computer for the sim, I got the dual core processor. Single core factory builds are getting scarce.
Specs as follows:
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 2.0 Ghz, 2Mb L2 cache, 800Mhz FSB, 2GB 800Mhz memory, DVD R/W dual drive, SATA 160GB 7200 RPM drive. Loaded with Win XP Pro.
It has on-board graphics and sound and only a 250 watt PSU.
This will be taken care of by a Sapphire ATI X1950 256Mb DDR3 12 pipeline video card and an internal Thermaltake 250 watt PSU. The audio will be a SB 4.0 Audigy.
It won't run FSX and the card is not DX10 capable, but I have no plans to run either FSX or Vista on any machine for the foreseeable future.
I bought it mostly for the ram, cache, and FSB speed.
This new system is about three times what I'm currently using. Maybe now I can actually enjoy some of the UT Europe scenery I have and start flying on-line again. It's been a looooong time.
This new system will be networked to the old system using Wideview and the old system will run the instrument panel for the 727.

I find that Vista is just too complicated to use. XP has all the bugs out of it and it runs great. I do want FSX but it take up to much of my computers resources. Rather just stick with good old fasion FS9.
Congrads on your new system! Happy frame rates !

I'm actually getting better results from FS9 on Vista using the same settings as I did with XP. Maybe its just a fluke. Hey Michael, take a look at Luke's post here: http://www.afva.net/thread.do?id=0xdac0 for a system he's building, or has built. I'm going to build the same one after hearing his reviews. The IP35-E motherboard is on newegg right now for $89.

that system will run FSX without problems. one piece of advice though, 250W is a little too small of a PSU. i would go with at least 400W, and possibly more. check the recommended wattage for your video card.

There is a separate 250 watt internal PSU for the video card.

I'm with you Michael, I don't really have a reason to get FSX or Vista for my desktop, all the payware I have (and just recently bought) are mainly developed for FS9 and it works great. That's a nice decent machine you got there too, I especially like the separate PSU for the video card.
Don't get me wrong though, I love vista, I have it on my laptop and it's great for what I use it for which is primarily school, watching movies and listening to music and internet stuff and a little gaming, nothing to extreme though.

My 727 is not yet FSX or Vista compatible with no foreseeable upgrades. I'm staying with WinXP Pro as long as I can. The new computer and video card should run FS better than I've ever seen it.

I'm like you, Ryan. My performance is better with the 2.66 GHz dual with Vista. My FR's barely budge with the most complicated scenery loaded with lots of traffic. The program that causes the most hit is ActiveSky at dusk/dawn with complicated cloud structures, and it's hardly noticeable. I am running FS9 by the way.

if you wanted something with a good FSB i think AMD's are better because they have a 1-1.6 Ghz FSB. even though they dont have huge caches, it been said that lots of cache don't mean anything if the CPU is slow to get it out. Here's an article about AMD vs. Intel:

First shot of the new system. Approaching EDDM from the south for the 08R intercept. Engischer Garten , the River Isar, and in the foreground the Marienplatz.
The Global scenery settings, Third Part Scenery, and terrain detail are maxed out in this shot. The Sapphire X1950 Pro settings are all maxed for appearance. The frame rate never fell below 23.8 FPS in any view, rotation, or view shift. No stutters, scenery reloads, or pauses. I couldn't be happier with the performance of the new system.
I've flown some of the smoothest approaches I've ever flown in the 727. It's like a whole 'nuther airplane.
EDITED: Sorry links still are not posting. Next build.
