And I am at a loss on how to use it effectively. Anyone know how to get this 40+ USD program to work effectively?

I use RC4 religiously when not on VATSIM ...never had any issues with it at all.
What is the problem - other than maybe you haven't taken the time to read the info on how to use it effectively?

Silly question, What is RC4? Googled it and it comes up with some security bs.

RC4 is Radar Contact and is a great ATC sim service. In contrast to the MS generic atc, RC4 will communicate with you and issue clearances, taxi instructions, weather data, takeoff clearances and enroute service. If you take the time to read the instructions, and set it up reasonably right, you will enjoy it. A little clue for you....if you enter a poor flight plan, you will get poor service.
Take care, Clarke

Stock FS ATC is still yelling at me, and eventually cancels my IFR clearance, and when that happens RC4 terminates, as it apparently is not for VFR use.

you can turn off the "stock" FS ATC through the main SETTING menu
Go to SETTINGS then click on Air Traffic Control, and you have 3 options:
SHOW ATC TEXT
AUTO OPEN ATC WINDOW
USE A PILOT VOICE
just make sure they are not checked - and don't hit the tilde/apostrophe (` or ~) button and all is well!

RC4 has proven to me that I was not aware as to its coverage. I was under teh assumption that is was a full replacement for the FS ATC. This is a case o not getting what I paid for...lesson learned. But for what is is it is a good program and hopefully it will be expanded in the future...I would still recommended it, but I am disappointed in its scope.

Brian - what do you mean? I have ATC coverage from Clearance through departure - to Center then back into approach the entire flight route. I can even "talk" to center with requests

Have to agree with Andrew - RC4 is for me the only way to go when not on Vatsim. Going back to FS ATC is a nightmare.
To be honest RC4 is good practise for Vatsim as well. Listen to the responses as they are read out and you will get the gist of what a Vatsim controller wants to hear.
Just get your head around the SID/STARS bit. It will save you a lot of hassle. To start with i would suggest using the 'No Depature Procedure' and let RC give you headings post take off. Then work in the 'Departure Procedures with alt restrictions'. Basically your SID ned to tie up with the first point in the FS Flight Plan for RC4 to realize you have finished your SID. I think you get 30 miles to fly around as much as you want before RC4 expects you to start flying the FS Flight Plan.
So to recap, create a flight plan that looks good in Flight Sim. This is the plan that RC4 uses so if need be load it up in Flight Sim as usual via the flight planner and make sure that what your going to fly is what that flight plan looks like.
Using the default aircraft is not a problem, load up the flight plan and hand the aircraft over to the GPS when you have finished the SID.
Payware, with the much more advanced FMC/MCDU hings can get a little more tricky. This is normally because the SIDS/STARS that are in the database conflict in some way with the flight plan you have. I always pipe in the SID and then use PLAN mode to cycle every waypoint to make sure it looks like it is going to be right. Ie no strange 90 degree turns or even flying completly the wrong way. Or my fav, the old go back and revisit a waypoint. This usually happens when the route has a waypoint that is in the Sid you just inserted as well.
On arrival, and this is the reason I love RV4, it will put you in a lovely pattern for a 15 - 20 mile approach to the runway. Just remember to make sure your heading bug is synced with your current heading after every waypoint because you will get a 'Fly Heading' command quite a long way from the airport sometimes. Nothing like that 'Whoa what is going on' feeling as your aircraft starts a nice 180 when you switch off Nav mode and go to heading mode.
All we really need is VFR ATC and that is it. RC5 has this I believe.

I am referring to VFR flights. It dosent replace FS ATC for VFR. Also is there a mod to get more lifelike voices in RC4? The robot delivery reminds me of "Wargames"!

well - the VFR conversation is going to be limited anyway...nature of the flight.
As far as adjusting / getting more realistic voices for RC4...read this:
Radar Contact 4 vs 4.01
This review is based on Radar Contact 4.01. JD was kind enough to submit the patch to me prior to the completion of the review. Since 4.01 will be available to the general public within a matter of days (by the time you read this review you should be using v4.01) I thought it only fair that the review be based on the most current available version.
Some of the fixes in RC 4.01 are:
- New method of "weaving" the WAVS together. The Old method was to play the files individually. The new method concatenates all files to be played into one file, and playing the new file.
- Japanese, Korean, Chinese versions of Windows will now run Rcv4.
- "Airport" removed from the non-FAA clearances.
- "Will give him a call" removed.
- Other "Doug-isms" removed.
- If rcv4 is not able to write the .rcd file to the \my documents\flight simulator files path after a save (either user initiated or autosave initiated), if rcv4 doesn't have the necessary permissions (eliminate run time error 75's hopefully).
- New voices screen, which puts each type of voice on a "tab". Each voice now has a slider associated with it, to slow it down if it is to fast. also a flag will appear when a voice is selected, for easier identification.
- Able to read flight plans which have a degree symbol instead of an asterisk in the lat/long field.
- Fixed the runtime error 9 with RC closing down when you hit a number key not in the adv display menu.
- Correct entry3, entry2, entry1, downwind, base and final after returning to departure airport, when the arrival airport has a high MSA.
- If the AI does not have the correct aircraft type, or I don't have the aircraft type defined, I will not say "follow the" or "give way to the".
- Restore the correct international settings for comma and period, when you click the "Quit RC" button.
The most obvious and monumental fix is the smoothness of the voices in 4.01 vs. 4. Many have complained that the voices are too slow. I confirmed that on my first flight without the 4.01 upgrade. Post upgrade, the voices are extremely fluid and truly mimic what is heard in the real world. In short, it makes a world of difference to RC experience as a whole.

As far as adjusting / getting more realistic voices for RC4...i believe there is a way to record your own voice - I have to dig - I remember reading something like that

Ah I see - Im sure you dont need to be told but you should have watched thier forums more before buying. It was well documented that VFR was not covered. Along with taxiway instructions it is the big thing everyone wants.
But I feel your pain :-) If I go VFR I actually revert back to FS ATC.
Or more likely go online.
As to the robot voices I am not sure.
Apologies if it sounded like I was teaching you to suck eggs above.
