After :05 - 2:00 of flying the screen looks like this, then locks up and crashes. This has happened on two video cards (8800GTX & 8800GT) on a new install of Vista, SP1, and Acceleration with no addons installed. Any ideas of what could cause this?

Thats what I thought too, but on both video cards? That seems unlikely.

I assume that you are using the DVI for the cards? are your drivers updated? this could be a lose connection between the DVI input cables from the card to your display.. Give it and try and let me know
cheers!

Peter,
Looks like FSX, is it?
I ran into problems of artifacts showing up while flying. Up dating the drivers did not solve the problems but it did reduce the amount I would see. I ended up moving all my sliders to minimum which eliminated the artifacts. I wasn't happy with that so I started customizing the settings which allowed for a better experience. I kept turning things on one at a time until the artifacts returned. One other thing that helped was running FS in windows mode. I gained FPS and was able to turn on more items at that point. One more item that helped but did not noticeably take away from the visuals was running in the 16 bit mode instead of 32 bit.

Robert, the reason moving your sliders to minimum cleared up the artifacts is that it reduced the workload being put on the GPU. In short, the card stopped overheating. The other possibility is that your power supply isn't providing enough juice for the card.

ummm..... just to let you know..... i recommend that you uninstall SP1 because microsoft pulled it off the market because it was causing more problems than actually fixing them.

Odd, that, since I'm running SP1 with no problems whatsoever.

Barry,
I can agree the workload being reduced but the artifacts would start as soon as I load up and sitting on the ground at a small airport like KTEX. Overheating? Didn't have a chance. I run other games that are just as or more demanding and they do not show the same problem. Power consumption? Not going to rule that out but when I upgraded to the C2D I upgraded the PS and the video is on its own rail.
One thing I have tried recently was going back to the original drivers which made the issue return immediately. After updating to the latest drivers the problem has resided for now.

No I do not overclock. I looked into it but the MOBO I have does not allow for much of a gain

Solutions :
1. Check for updated Drivers
2. Check for Temperature of card using this ---> http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
3. Reset settings to default in Video Cards settings
4.If you continue having this problem look into warranty or purchasing another card ( Yours is probably fried )
Goodluck !!!

The reason I asked about overclocking is that artifacts like that can be a sign of video memory timing issues. When the memory starts to become unstable it will do that.
If that's not the case then I would still suspect heat or power as the culprits.

Pull the card out blow it off with canned air, do the same to the computer and the slot the card cam out in and re-seat the card. I had the same problem with a 6800GT card, it kept wiggling loose from the AGP slot from an over sized Cooler
