In general, laptops are not good for gaming, no matter which game we're talking about.

Does it really need to be a lap?
A desktop is a thousand times better when it comes to gaming.
Now, if you're buying the laptop for work or school, that's something else.

A laptop, because of its size, does not have a graphics card. It takes all the memory off of the RAM card which slows down the game and your computer. In a desktop, you have a graphics card which means better performance in the game and the computer. Desktops are also less expensive than laptops for the same memory, cpu, etc.

You can get a graphics card for a laptop - Dell offers them on theirs - however a laptop is expensive compared to a desktop and even with the add-on graphics card, the desktop PC is still a better performer.

well - O can say that my new laptop is AWESOME....you can find my threads but
MacBook Pro
FSX runs with great FPS (75+) and not lower than about 25 in high FPS areas. FS9 runs ridiculously fast
I am a new Mac convert - like 24 hours now...
Cost some buckage - but so far - worth every penny

As a former FS laptop user for several years (at least eight) and having just made the switch to a desktop this year, while latpop flying was not bad at all (Had Dell 8100 from 2000 and a 9300 which was fully loaded from 2005), there were definate downsides. An example is the lack of a solid CPU. My 9300 always seemed to lag under intense gaming conditions due to the CPU. Moreover, when I added 1GB of RAM into the 9300, it caused the computer to overheat and seize up because the heatsink was not made to process 2GB under heavy stress unless using a fan to keep the air moving (thats my general conclusion of that issue).
My new desktop, a Dell XPS 420, is night and day from the 9300. The fluidity, even under stress, is unbelievable (for me at least).
In my opinion, unless you are looking for a balance of gaming and portability (which is hard to find in a laptop :-) ), go for a desktop. At first, I was skeptical of having just a desktop due to the lack of portability, but I picked up a two year-old no-frills Dell D-400 Latitude notebook at a bargain price.
Ian, I think you are referring to lower-end laptops which don't have video cards because they are built for road warriors who don't need them. If you check out any major notebook brand, you will see that the middle of the road laptops offer some form of a video card (albeit not a great one, but one nevertheless).
Andrew, converted to the dark side I see I will admit, though, that although they are ridiculously overpriced for the physical parts they ship with (its all about style, right... ), OSX is quite a nice operating system.

Here's what you do. Build yourself a strong PC with the guts to run your gaming applications smoothly. Head on over to Pete Dawson's page and purchase a key for WideFS. Go find an old cast-off PC (anything that can run Windows XP, really) and clean it up to run a simplified Windows XP environment. Boot the main PC and kill everything that's absolutely unnecessary to your PC's operation and load FS. Boot the "sidekick" PC, and load up your peripherals via the WideFS connection (Deltacars, SB3/FSInn, ActiveSky, FS RealTime, etc.) and connect. By placing the connection and computational resources of your peripheral programs on the other slower PC (which doesn't need speed because you aren't asking much of it in the graphical arena) you are freeing up the sim PC to be asset pure, running JUST FS9/FSX at it's highest possible FPS.
It also helps, because you don't run the risk of accidentally deploying your gear with a miss-key while browsing around during cruise, etc. Been there, done that, snapped many a gear in those days..
Slightly of topic: For those of you with fast PC's with mid-range graphics cards, I have a highly modified FS9.cfg file you can use if you like which has many background tweaks to improve your FS9 experience before you finally get around to purchasing that rocket vid card. Shoot me a private message with your email address and I'll kick it off to you.
